Top Ten Tuesday: TV Fandoms

Hosted by The Broke and the Bookish
I don't have scientific proof, but I'm pretty sure that bookish people are the greatest fans. Not only do we create bookish fandoms (The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, or The Fault in Our Stars, anyone?) and follow them unfailingly on all social media fronts (mainly on Tumblr), but we also wave around our TV flags proudly. Except for my family members, I only follow bookish people on my Twitter (they're the only people that interest me, Facebook is for friends IRL and draaaaama). Because of that, my Twitter feed is about mostly about books, but the secondary slot goes to other forms of entertainment. Every week, I get tweets about The Bachelorette/The Bachelor, I see Tumblr photosets of Sherlock or Doctor Who, and when a movie comes out, there WILL be movie reviews, song lyrics, or thoughts posted. Bookish people make the best fandoms. We know how to be loyal. We know have to squeal. We know how to express and emote. We're used to it. And so, like we have our favorite books, we have our favorite TV shows.

When people tell me TV show fandoms aren't as big.
Or  that they don't like TV.
That's why I love this week's Top Ten Tuesday topic. I love seeing new TV show/movie recommendations, but I also love seeing the TV side of my literary peeps. Doctor Who and Sherlock always seem to be the most popular (I think it's the "geek factor") and while I need to watch Sherlock sometime, neither of those are on my list. In no particular order, I list the top TV shows I like bombard my DVR with.

1. Blacklist. Actually, I lied. There's no particular order after THIS one. Blacklist is, hands down, my favorite TV show. It's creepy, suspenseful and DRAMATIC. It also has the fabulous James Snyder. And unlike other shows or even movies, I even had to close my eyes at some parts.

2. Ellen. The Ellen Degeneres Show might be a "talk show," but it's the one show that has made me laugh repeatedly and watch every episode even though I know only half of the guests they have on. Those Dennis Quaid secret camera segments? GOLD.

3. The Amazing Race. The show I watch with my dad and no matter how annoying the contestants are, I CARE and I'm hooked. I'm usually so tense in the second half of the season because I NEED the my decent people to make it.

4. Person of Interest. We actually just caught up last night to the season finale and I CAN'T EVEN.

5. The Big Bang Theory. I'm a TBBT newbie even though my siblings started watching a long time ago. It's a perfectly hilarious 30 minute break from life.

6. Elementary. Retelling of Sherlock with Watson as a girl. I feel like there's another show that may deserve this spot more. But I can't remember and I crave to catch up since we're SIX episodes behind so it deserves this #6 slot.

7. Once Upon a Time. It really shouldn't be on this list. I feel almost ashamed that it is because of everything it's done to me this past season. BUT IT IS. I can't help it.

8. Dance Moms. I'm a horrible human being especially since I read Something Real. It's addicting, okay?

9. So You Think You Can Dance or America's Got Talent. I felt like they should share a spot since they're both competition reality TV. SYTYCD has wonderful choreography and pleasant people. AGT has magic and hilarious auditions.

10. Downton Abbey. Oh, what you do to me, Downton. Characters have been scarred, have lied, kept secrets, DIED, and have completely crushed my soul. I keep going back for more.

While some of these don't necessarily have fandoms, they have me as a loyal watcher, whether I treat it as the best thing ever or as a guilty pleasure. So what are your TV fandoms?

  1. I don't watch a whole lot of TV anymore... unless it's reruns on Netflix, but So You Think You Can Dance is one I still watch religiously. I love that show. Big Bang Theory is one of the best shows on TV, too. Anytime I watch it, I end up virtually in tears by the end of the show!

    1. I used to watch SYTYCD religiously, but now it's a bit harder to stick with it post-auditions. But such a great show still!

  3. I like Blacklist...I catch it every once in awhile because it's my hubby's favorite show, but I don't follow it religiously. And why should you be ashamed that OUAT is on your list?!? It's on mine, too. I don't watch much television these days, so I included a lot of past favorites, too. I'm noticing pretty much no one else did that, though. *shrugs* I don't watch reality TV. I didn't before reading Something Real and I still don't. :)

    1. I feel embarrassed because of how annoyed I've been. My rants and nitpicks with it should forbid it a spot on this list, but HERE IT IS. Ooh, that's a great idea!

  4. *sighs* Ah, Downton Abbey. I watched the fourth season with my mom, and then I went back and have been watching the past seasons so I fully know what's brought us to this point. I used to love OUAT, too, but you know why I've stopped watching.

  5. I'm always on the lookout for more TV recommendations, so thanks for these Summer! I only just started watching Once A Upon a Time (I'm on episode 3) and already in love, but I am worried about what I'm going to be put through in future episodes! Brilliant list Summer!

    1. Oh, Jasprit, the first season of OUAT is the BEST. I'm so happy <3

  6. Yay once Upon a Time! Though to be honest, I stopped somewhere on the second season because, I don't know, life got in the way? Well guess I need to start it up soon!

    1. Really, like I said up there, the 1st season is the best. 2nd was alright, but as fan, I guess I have to push you to resume!

  7. I love Ellen! And I have been known to watch a little Dance Moms too though I also feel horrible about it :) You're making me want to checkout The Blacklist!

    1. Isn't it the ultimate GUILTY pleasure? It's so bad. But so good.

  8. THE AMAZING RACE! My mom got me to try it a few years ago and now I'm totally addicted to it! We watch it together now! And yes, when it's an extra close finish between a likable team and an annoying team? I get very tense. And I might yell at the TV a little. ;) I haven't watched a lot of TBBT, but the little I have watched, I have enjoyed! It's very funny! But I haven't really watched any of the other shows on your list (Though, my Mom is a major fan of Elementary and I know a lot about it from her!), though a few I'm interested in! :)

    1. ME TOO. I yell and rant more with that show than any other.

  9. I am so not a tv watcher. That sounds incredibly snobbish of me, but I have 2 good reasons 1) I only have time in my life these days for either reading or watching, and I choose reading. 2) TV shows just seem to go on forever and after about 2 seasons the plots get wacky and the love interests continue to be pulled apart. I'd rather read a story with a resolution. That said, I do watch occasionally. I loved the first 3 seasons of Downton until that person died. I haven't seen season 4 but do plan on it. I watched the first 2 seasons of Once, but that one got crazy. I LOOVEEEE Ellen but am not around when she's on tv. I've not watched the Blacklist but it sounds like one of those where you can pick it up whenever and follow the mystery of the day, but it also has an overarching plot. I like shows like that. Anyway, I just wrote way too much here. Glad you enjoy all of these!

    1. Actually, I really understand your reasons. I LOVED Psych, but like with other shows, it just got worse each season until I stoppe watching because I couldn't bear it any longer. One show that never grew bad IMO was Monk. Oh, that person. *nods solemnly* DVR, girl. But I agree with your assessments on all of these!

  10. I need to continue OUAT! I've seen the first 2 seasons, and I was hooked. I just didn't make time to keep up with the 3rd, but I have heard things go a lil overboard, so I'm nervous about continuing but intrigued all the same. When OUAT came out, so did GRIMM, which is a supernatural police procedural drama on NBC. I wish I knew someone who watched it. I can never talk about it with anyone. lol But I think it's good, and it got the green light for a 4th season too! So, I'm very happy about that! I also watch The Walking Dead! The first 2 seasons were EPIC! The 3rd was a bit of a letdown, but the 4th picked things up again. (Well... I'm still technically in the middle of the season, but I'm very satisfied with what I've seen thus far).

As far as reality TV is concerned, I watch Catfish every now and then. But my summer reality TV show of choice is Big Brother! I try not to watch, but man, it's addictive!

And while we're on the topic of fandoms, can I say I'm a loyal fan of the Houston Rockets? I follow their regular season games religiously! That's about 3-4 games per week between the end of October to the end of April. I think a lot of my free time is consumed by basketball, but that's okay. I LOVE keeping up. :)

    1. It really did get to be TOO much. One of the reasons why I can't believe I'm still watching it, even having it on this list! Oh, Grimm is one that I kept meaning to watch! I VOLUNTEER AS TRIBUTE. I'll catch up asap ;) The Walking Dead is raved about EVERYWHERE. One I need to watch too. So many.

All of the shows you mention are ones I've heard so much about!

  11. The blacklist is high on my watch list, I think it's something I will really enjoy watching together with my boyfriend. The big bang theory ALMOST made it to my list, but I couldn't cheat too much, haha. I really like the humor and geeks are the best. Once upon a time <3 I want to see Elementary, I really liked some of the random episodes I've seen. Also, Downtown abbey! I need to see that one soon.

  13. I'm not much of a TV watcher - mostly Game of Thrones - but occasionally I like my reality TV too - America's Got Talent, Amazing Race, Survivor, Big Brother, etc. I used to watch those obsessively, but now so much of my time is taken up by reading. :P

    1. GoT is one that I figured would be on a lot of people's list. Reality TV is so addicting, I admit it, and I'm so ashamed to watch it.

  14. WAIT WAIT WAIT. James Snyder is on The Blacklist? *makes mental note to watch this show now* Also, I am obsessed with The Amazing Race! It's seriously a cool show idea, and I'm always rooting for a random "nice" team :)

  15. My nose is always in a book lately so I haven't watched much TV besides Modern Family that seems to always be playing while I'm making dinner. My husband loves that show! That show is so completely funny so I don't mind that we have the reruns as well as the first runs playing often. I've never heard of Blacklist but I'll have to check it out. I've seen 2 episodes of Once Upon a Time and liked it, but I just never got back to it. The episodes of Big Bang Theory I've caught have been super funny so I should watch that more often, too.

I did a marathon of the first season of Dowton Abbey one day. I thought I'd watch a couple of episodes, got sucked in and watched all 8 or 9 (?) in one day. Never got out of my PJs that day. I was home from work so a nice way to veg! I haven't watched the other seasons but my mother-in-law spoiled the huge death!!! Ugh! So wasn't happy about that. :(

    Great post here, Summer! :)

  16. I love once upon a time. Though season three got a little weird for me. I will admit after watching the show Snow White is no longer my least favorite Disney princess.

  17. The Big Bang theory! I wasn't always convinced about it, but it definitely makes me laugh. Sometimes that's just all I'm after. I haven't watched Downton Abbey though, even though it's so popular. Most of my favourite TV shows are older ones, like Friends, Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars. Right now, I'm mostly obsessed with Game of Thrones, Sherlock and Doctor Who (more out of loyalty than anything!) but look forward to starting some of the new ones I've discovered today. :D

  18. YESSS!!! FANGIRLING :D I ned to start Blacklist. Srsly. Everyone's talking about it :D AND lol! Ellen is the best talk show imo. I also like Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon :) I need to start TBBT :D OUAT AND SYTYCD!!! CAPTAIN SWAN FEELS. EVERYWHERE!!! My fav is ofc Teen Wolf, but yeah. The last two are totes awesome as well ;)

  19. HUGE fan of The Blacklist and Downton Abbey! I love TBBT and Person of Interest, and I totally understand the weird attraction to Once Upon a Time.

    Awesome list!

  20. "I'm pretty sure that bookish people are the greatest fans." This. So much. I totally agree, I feel like we just fall into things really hardcore. I get obsessive over things pretty fast, especially TV shows xD I'm really curious about the Blacklist, I've seen it on TV when I was just skipping through channels and was pretty interested in it although I never really went and watched a full episode. And heck yes, OUAT. But the FEELS :/

  21. I think I watched one episode of Blacklist and it was pretty good. I can watch Person of Interest and Elementary if I have some spare time; but I've all but given up hope on Once Upon a Time. So much potential...gone down the drain.

  22. I don't watch any of these shows other than Once Upon a Time or Downton Abbey, but yes to both of those, especially the latter. *turns away from computer for quick crying break* I keep thinking I should find some other crime shows to watch, and Person of Interest is on my radar.
