Cover Love #18

Hosted by Bookshelvers Anonymous

Title: Predmediated

Author: Josin McQuein

Publication date: October 8, 2013

Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers

A week ago, Dinah’s cousin Claire cut her wrists.

Five days ago, Dinah found Claire’s diary and discovered why.

Three days ago, Dinah stopped crying and came up with a plan.

Two days ago, she ditched her piercings and bleached the black dye from her hair.

Yesterday, knee socks and uniform plaid became a predator’s camouflage.

Today, she’ll find the boy who broke Claire.

By tomorrow, he’ll wish he were dead.

Why I love:

The synopsis is very creepy and unlike what I usually read and gravitate towards. But the cover illustrates it so well and I can't help being drawn to it. The dirty, broken window with the girl's face solemnly looking through. She doesn't look like she has any regrets with what she just did and it's making me intrigued even more, forcing me to reread the synopsis many times. Her hair looks a bit gray to me though, which I'm not a fan for. I'll overlook it. If you're not a fan, reread the synopsis while glancing up at the cover, that might solve your problem.

Author: Elizabeth Wein

Publication date: September 10, 2013

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

While flying an Allied fighter plane from Paris to England, American ATA pilot and amateur poet, Rose Justice, is captured by the Nazis and sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious women's concentration camp. Trapped in horrific circumstances, Rose finds hope in the impossible through the loyalty, bravery and friendship of her fellow prisoners. But will that be enough to endure the fate that’s in store for her?

Elizabeth Wein, author of the critically-acclaimed and best-selling Code Name Verity, delivers another stunning WWII thriller. The unforgettable story of Rose Justice is forged from heart-wrenching courage, resolve, and the slim, bright chance of survival

Why I love:

I just can't stop staring at it. I honestly, really can't. I still haven't read Code Name Verity, although I'll be fixing that soon, but this companion novel is everything I like. It's mysterious with the red scarf flying in the wind on the gate, it displays some WWII on the cover with the planes, and everything about this cover just screams pretty to me. I love everything about it and even though compared to others, it's not exactly eye-catching, it definitely catches my eye every time.

Author: Ally Carter

Publication date: September 17, 2013

Publisher Disney-Hyperion

Cammie Morgan has lost her father and her memory, but in the heart-pounding conclusion to the best-selling Gallagher Girls series, she finds her greatest mission yet. Cammie and her friends finally know why the terrorist organization called the Circle of Cavan has been hunting her. Now the spy girls and Zach must track down the Circle’s elite members to stop them before they implement a master plan that will change Cammie—and her country—forever.

Why I love:

WHY WOULDN'T I LOVE THIS?

So I may be bias in my thinking that this cover is absolutely wonderful considering that I am Ally Carter's biggest fan and would read her grocery lists and clean up any pet poop in her yard just for her. Does that sound too creepy and out there? I have read all of the Gallagher Girls, introduced them to Shelver and my other sister as well as friends and people on the internet.

Cammie is now in a graduation gown on the cover with a really nice red for the background (I knew it! Ally mentioned red in her interview as an "example"). The spine is also really pretty and I love how they have different colored spines for each book in the series. The title is cute, the outfit is cute, everything on the cover is cute.

Excuse me as I go fan-girl in the corner and wipe a tear.

Author: Dawn Klehr

Behind-the-scenes secrets could turn deadly for Desmond and Riley

Life in the Heights has never been easy for seventeen-year-old Riley Frost, but when she's publicly dumped and outed at the same time, she becomes an immediate social outcast at her high school. So Riley swears off romance and throws herself into solving the shocking murder of her favorite teacher, Ms. Dunn.

Riley turns to her best friend, budding filmmaker Desmond Brandt, for help. What she doesn't know is that Dez has been secretly directing her life, blackmailing her friends, and hoping his manipulations will make her love him. When his schemes go too far, Dez's web of lies threatens to destroy both of their lives.

Why I love:

It's just so...creepy. The main character's best friend is a filmmaker, but he's molding her own life by manipulating and blackmailing because he wants her to love him. Creepy and controlling, how nice. With him being a filmmaker, I love the hands even more on the cover. The girl seems to be in a dark alley and I feel like any moment, the hands will suddenly reach out for her. The tagline is also a really nice touch.

Thank you, Cover Snark, for showing me this fantastic cover!

Do you love this?

Title: Dead Ends

Author: Erin Jode Lange

Publication date: September 3, 2013

Publisher: Bloomsbury

Dane Washington is one suspension away from expulsion. In a high school full of “haves,” being a “have not” makes Dane feel like life is hurtling toward one big dead end. Billy D. spends his high school days in Special Ed and he’s not exactly a “have” himself. The biggest thing Billy’s missing? His dad. Billy is sure the riddles his father left in an atlas are really clues to finding him again and through a bizarre turn of events, he talks Dane into joining him on the search.
A bully and a boy with Down syndrome makes for an unlikely friendship, but together, they work through the clues, leading to unmarked towns and secrets of the past. But they’re all dead ends. Until the final clue . . . and a secret Billy shouldn’t have been keeping.
As a journalist, Erin Jade Lange is inspired by hot button issues like bullying, but it is her honest characters and breakneck plotting that make Dead Ends a must-read.

Why I love:

I initially saw this cover a few days (weeks? I have no idea, everything is blurred together) ago and was so intrigued. I then saw it again on Cover Snark and officially knew I had to highlight it in Cover Love. First of all, the colors are great. Secondly, I love the quirkiness of it. A bully and a boy with Down Syndrome working on a mystery sounds very quirky to me and I think this cover represents the synopsis very well. The street, the cartoonish wall, the bright Dead End sign, the boys...I could go on about all the things I love about it.

Cover Love #11

Hosted by Bookshelvers Anonymous

Author: Jane Nickerson

Publication date: March 12, 2013

Publisher: Random House Children's Books

The Bluebeard fairy tale retold. . . .

When seventeen-year-old Sophia Petheram’s beloved father dies, she receives an unexpected letter. An invitation—on fine ivory paper, in bold black handwriting—from the mysterious Monsieur Bernard de Cressac, her godfather. With no money and fewer options, Sophie accepts, leaving her humble childhood home for the astonishingly lavish Wyndriven Abbey, in the heart of Mississippi.

Sophie has always longed for a comfortable life, and she finds herself both attracted to and shocked by the charm and easy manners of her overgenerous guardian. But as she begins to piece together the mystery of his past, it’s as if, thread by thread, a silken net is tightening around her. And as she gathers stories and catches whispers of his former wives—all with hair as red as her own—in the forgotten corners of the abbey, Sophie knows she’s trapped in the passion and danger of de Cressac’s intoxicating world.

Glowing strands of romance, mystery, and suspense are woven into this breathtaking debut—a thrilling retelling of the “Bluebeard” fairy tale.

Why I love:

I know this has been out for a little bit, but I love many things about this cover. Not only is the model gorgeous, but also I love the antique look of the cover, how it's faded. The swirls are a nice touch and my eye even keeps drifting over to the building in the corner.

I say it's a win!

Cover Love #10

Hosted by Bookshelvers Anonymous

Author: Alexandra Coutts

Publication date: September 17, 2013

Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux

A novel about the end of days full of surprising beginnings

The world is living in the shadow of oncoming disaster. An asteroid is set to strike the earth in just one week’s time; catastrophe is unavoidable. The question isn’t how to save the world—the question is, what to do with the time that's left? Against this stark backdrop, three island teens wrestle with intertwining stories of love, friendship and family—all with the ultimate stakes at hand.

Alexandra Coutts's TUMBLE & FALL is a powerful story of courage, love, and hope at the end of the world.

Why I love:

I first saw this at Cover Snark and it was actually not one they snarked on! While twinkling lights are a big rage in YA covers, I still love them in this cover. I'm also a fan of how the "&" is placed in the middle and how they are laying in the grass. It feels very whimsical.

I'm going with another Rapunzel-themed cover this week, I could not resist!

Author: KC Hilton

Publication date: 2013

Publisher: Still unknown

My tale has been told again and again, and I’ve heard each one. Except for my hair, I barely recognize the pitiful renditions. Muddled versions, crafted to entertain laughing children…but the children wouldn’t have laughed if they’d known the real story. It wasn't their fault. They didn't know the truth. Nobody did.

My name is Rapunzel and I will tell you my story. I will tell you the truth.

It's Rapunzel. She looks like she is about to fight. Personally, I like the lighting. I'm not too sure about the different patterns in the light, but they must be important, right? I'm not sure if this cover is actually pretty or if it is my biased, Rapunzel-loving mind that goes "Ooh!"

Along with my love for this cover, the synopsis gets me insanely excited. It's a win-win.

Cover Love #7

Hosted by Bookshelvers Anonymous
Considering it's not only Fairy Tale February over at Alice in Readerland (something you must check out if you haven't) and Valentine's Day today, I thought it would be fitting to do a fairy tale retelling cover today. Most fairy-tales are about love.

Title: Towering

Author: Alex Flinn

Publication date: May 14, 2013

Publisher: HarperTeen

At first, I merely saw his face, his hands on the window ledge. Then, his whole body as he swung himself through the window. Only I could not see what he swung on.
Until, one day, I told my dream self to look down. And it was then that I saw. He had climbed on a rope. I knew without asking that the rope had been one of my own tying.

Rachel is trapped in a tower, held hostage by a woman she’s always called Mama. Her golden hair is growing rapidly, and to pass the time, she watches the snow fall and sings songs from her childhood, hoping someone, anyone, will hear her.

Wyatt needs time to reflect or, better yet, forget about what happened to his best friend, Tyler. That’s why he’s been shipped off to the Adirondacks in the dead of winter to live with the oldest lady in town. Either that, or no one he knows ever wants to see him again.

Dani disappeared seventeen years ago without a trace, but she left behind a journal that’s never been read, not even by her overbearing mother…until now.

Not only do I love the synopsis, but the cover catches my eye. I'm a huge fan of Rapunzel, especially after Tangled came out, so I get excited seeing her long, blonde hair. You see the tower in the background and everything seems so dreamy with the snow. While I'm not a big fan of her face, I still like this cover.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Author: J. J. Howard

Publication date: April, 2013

Publisher: Scholastic Point

A music-obsessed, slightly snarky New York City girl, Lexi is on her own. After making a huge mistake—and facing a terrible tragedy— Lexi has no choice but to track down her long-absent mother. Rumor has it that Lexi’s mom is somewhere in Florida with a traveling circus.

When Lexi arrives at her new, three-ring reality, her mom isn’t there…but her destiny might be. Surrounded by tigers, elephants, and trapeze artists, Lexi finds some surprising friends and an even more surprising chance at true love. She even lucks into a spot as the circus’s fortune teller, reading tarot cards and making predictions.

But then Lexi’s ex-best friend from home shows up, and suddenly it’s Lexi’s own future that’s thrown into question…

With humor, wisdom, and a dazzlingly fresh voice, this debut reminds us of the magic of circus tents, city lights, first kisses, last heartaches, and the importance of an excellent playlist.

~*~

Just look. Honestly, if you don't know why I love this cover, you haven't looked at it. I love the colors with the sky and the circus. There's Lexi with a bag in her hand, obviously just coming on to the circus scene. Everything about this cover screams "magical" to me which is great because it keeps reminding me of the last line of the synopsis: ...of the magic of circus tents, city lights, first kisses, last heartaches, and the importance of an excellent playlist.

So not only does it have an amazing cover, it also has a synopsis that I adore. April 2013, I love you.

And thanks you, Endlessly Bookish, for making me aware of it by putting it as your Waiting on Wednesday post. Subscribing by email, following blogs, and just the blog community in general is so useful!

Title: The Program
Author: Suzanne Young
Expected publication: April 30th, 2013
Publisher: Simon Pulse
ISBN: 1442445807

In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.

Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.

Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.

Do I really need to say anything? Simple, gives you a good idea, and makes you pay attention. The only thing I have a problem with is the color of the title because on my computer, I can barely see it.

Cover Love #4

Property of Bookshelvers Anonymous

It’s 1950, and as the French Quarter of New Orleans simmers with secrets, seventeen-year-old Josie Moraine is silently stirring a pot of her own. Known among locals as the daughter of a brothel prostitute, Josie wants more out of life than the Big Easy has to offer. She devises a plan get out, but a mysterious death in the Quarter leaves Josie tangled in an investigation that will challenge her allegiance to her mother, her conscience, and Willie Woodley, the brusque madam on Conti Street.

Josie is caught between the dream of an elite college and a clandestine underworld. New Orleans lures her in her quest for truth, dangling temptation at every turn, and escalating to the ultimate test.

With characters as captivating as those in her internationally bestselling novel Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys skillfully creates a rich story of secrets, lies, and the haunting reminder that decisions can shape our destiny.

**Since Blogger is messing up ONCE AGAIN, I have to do it in this format. Not terrible, but not what I'm used to.**

Anyways, I've been looking at this cover for the longest time, impatient to put it in Cover Love. When I first saw it, I thought, "COVER LOVE!"

First of all, I love the colors. Then of course, the bird cage. It definitely fits into the synopsis with her wanting to get out of New Orleans and her past. You can't look at the bird cage without looking at the girl behind the cage either, which I like. She's just looking at it, as if that's her only life...which it kind of is.

And although it's not part of the cover, can I rave about how much I love the past? It's not too historical, only the 1950s, but I love that time period. I also just love history. Period.

I didn't realize until now after reading the synopsis for the hundredth time that Ruta Sepetys wrote this book. Seriously, if it didn't have a gorgeous cover, I would have just shoved it into a Wishlist Wednesday post since I can't wait to read this book. But Ruta Sepetys? My sister, *ahem* the one who actually runs Cover Love, just finished reading her bestseller Between Shades of Gray, which she drooled over. The same book that I now am dying to read. WWII!

I know I'm rambling, but this looks great and I can't help but start squealing over other books.

Now, what cover do you love?

Cover Love #3

Property of Bookshelvers Anonymous!
This is my third Cover Love. It's where bloggers can gab about covers they adore, love, are interested in, etc. So go to Bookshelvers Anonymous and check it out! You can also look at any other links there. Enjoy!

Eva and Addie started out the same way as everyone else--two souls woven together in one body, taking turns controlling their movements as they learned how to walk, how to sing, how to dance. But as they grew, so did the worried whispers. Why aren't they settling? Why isn't one of them fading? The doctors ran tests, the neighbors shied away, and their parents begged for more time. Finally Addie was pronounced healthy and Eva was declared gone. Except, she wasn't...

For the past three years, Eva has clung to the remnants of her life. Only Addie knows she's still there, trapped inside their body. Then one day, they discover there may be a way for Eva to move again. The risks are unimaginable-hybrids are considered a threat to society, so if they are caught, Addie and Eva will be locked away with the others. And yet...for a chance to smile, to twirl, to speak, Eva will do anything.

There are a couple reasons why I really like this cover. While there seems to be more and more covers showing only half of a girl's face, I like how they twisted it around on this cover. It's as if it's going to consume all of her and we just see a snapshot of it before it covers the whole page.

Her eyes tell a good story as well. They look watery as if she was crying. The expressions she has is stony, but sad and I like the coloring around her forehead. If you read the synopsis (come on, if you didn't, GO BACK), it's pretty obvious to emphasize "me." At the same time, I didn't notice it at first and when I did, I thought it was a nice touch.

I've had this on my wishlist for a while and this was supposed to be my first Cover Love, but other covers kept drawing my attention. However, personally, I thought this cover deserved some love as well.

1 Concert
2000 Miles
3 Ex-Best Friends

Alice, Summer, and Tiernan are ex-best friends.

Back in middle school, the three girls were inseparable. They were also the number one fans of the rock band Level3.

But when the band broke up, so did their friendship. Summer ran with the popular crowd, Tiernan was a rebellious wild-child, and Alice spent high school with her nose buried in books.

Now, just as the girls are about to graduate, Level3 announces a one-time-only reunion show.

Even though the concert’s 2000 miles away, Alice buys three tickets on impulse. And as it turns out, Summer and Tiernan have their own reasons for wanting to get out of town. Good thing Alice’s graduation gift (a pea-green 1976 VW camper van known as the Pea Pod) is just the vehicle to get them there.

But on the long drive cross-country, the girls hit more than a few bumps in the road. Will their friendship get an encore or is the show really over?
(description from Goodreads)

While this has been published for a little while, I haven't seen it since about September (I think). Since it is in Cover Love, I like the cover (no duh). It's simple, doesn't make me go WOW, but it makes me pay attention. The best part of a simple cover is that you can take it all in without wasting about an hour of your life trying to decipher everything. Then you can't go boring simple (which this isn't) or no one will be interested. I do like the short description at the top "1 concert 2,000 miles 3 ex-best friends." It interests me even more. Hello, who does not like road trips and awkward past relationships/friendships?

Is it just me or do we not have a lot of yellow books? It is a good thing, because if there were too many, my eyes might start to hurt. With this, though, my eyes instantly go to it. Also, I like the color yellow.

Without sounding freaky, can I say I really like the girls' legs? I like how they are all standing slightly different and you can tell who is who. Of course, we see bags in the background which completes the whole thing.

Do you like this cover? Why or why not?

Cover Love #1

Property of Bookshelvers Anonymous
I've decided to add on another meme! Readers, let me introduce you to Cover Love, if you haven't heard of it already. Every other Thursday (I will not be able to do it every week!) I'll be talking about a book that has a cover I like. That's basically it. I can gush, squeal, or just explain why I picked that exact cover. All thanks to Shelver at Bookshelvers Anonymous, I have this chance!

Don’t Sweat.  Don’t Laugh.  Don’t draw attention to yourself.  And most of all, whatever you do, do not fall in love with one of them.

Gene is different from everyone else around him.  He can’t run with lightning speed, sunlight doesn’t hurt him and he doesn’t have an unquenchable lust for blood.  Gene is a human, and he knows the rules.  Keep the truth a secret.  It’s the only way to stay alive in a world of night—a world where humans are considered a delicacy and hunted for their blood.

When he’s chosen for a once in a lifetime opportunity to hunt the last remaining humans, Gene’s carefully constructed life begins to crumble around him.  He’s thrust into the path of a girl who makes him feel things he never thought possible—and into a ruthless pack of hunters whose suspicions about his true nature are growing. Now that Gene has finally found something worth fighting for, his need to survive is stronger than ever—but is it worth the cost of his humanity?

I was searching for books and then BANG--this smacked me in the head. I felt as if it pulled me through the screen. Just look at it. Personally, I love it.

You see two different kind of worlds. You see the lighter side with two teens. But then outside of it, there's a darker, harsher world. It's as if it's being ripped. People are running. They're panicking and it looks like the world is ending. With the cover and the description, you know people are trying to survive. Although dark, I like the darker "world" the best. It's so creepy and even sad. I do love the contrast though with the bright yellow in the center.

I'm not a huge fan of guy POVs, but I'm getting more and more used to them. This is one I'll probably pick up just because of that very cool cover.

What do you think? What cover are you intrigued by?
