Wishlist Wednesday #23

Hosted by Pen to Paper
Title: Dear Killer
Author: Katherine Ewell
Publication date: April 1, 2014
Publisher: Katherine Tegan Books

Rule One—Nothing is right, nothing is wrong.

Rule Two—Be careful.
Rule Three—Fight using your legs whenever possible, because they’re the strongest part of your body. Your arms are the weakest.
Rule Four—Hit to kill. The first blow should be the last, if at all possible.
Rule Five—The letters are the law.

Kit takes her role as London’s notorious “Perfect Killer” seriously. The letters and cash that come to her via a secret mailbox are not a game; choosing who to kill is not an impulse decision. Every letter she receives begins with “Dear Killer,” and every time Kit murders, she leaves a letter with the dead body. Her moral nihilism and thus her murders are a way of life—the only way of life she has ever known.

But when a letter appears in the mailbox that will have the power to topple Kit’s convictions as perfectly as she commits her murders, she must make a decision: follow the only rules she has ever known, or challenge Rule One, and go from there.

Katherine Ewell’s Dear Killer is a sinister psychological thriller that explores the thin line between good and evil, and the messiness of that inevitable moment when life contradicts everything you believe

Why I'm wishing:

This could be a very big miss once I read it, but I refuse to think that this will be anything less than stellar. It involves letters, London, rules, psychological aspects, and sinisterly things. And I love the simplistic cover. I want to know more about this intriguing main character and even more interesting plot.

Are you wishing for this? What are you wishing for?

Title: Cress (Lunar Chronicles #3)
Author: Marissa Meyer
Publication date: February 4, 2014
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends

Rapunzel’s tower is a satellite. She can’t let down her hair—or her guard.

In this third book in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.

Their best hope lies with Cress, who has been trapped on a satellite since childhood with only her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker—unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.

When a daring rescue goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing stop her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only ones who can.

Why I'm wishing:

Can we just take a moment to take in that beautiful cover? I'm absolutely loving it. Now we can all join in together and hate that February is so far away. I've been seeing this mentioned on my Twitter feed and desperately want this one. It involves a Rapunzel retelling, but we will also get to see our old favorites, like Cinder and Scarlet

It doesn't hurt that I hear Thorne is the love interest, which I so guessed in my interview with Marissa Meyer earlier this year. Yes, please.

Title: See Jane Run
Author: Hannah Jayne
Publication date: January 7, 2014
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

For sixteen-year-old Riley, one question will change everything: Who is Jane O'Callahan?

Riley Spencer never thought twice about keeping secrets from her parents-not big ones, at least. They didn't need to know that her math tutor was also her boyfriend and that cocktail dress she "borrowed" from her mom would be back before she missed it. But when she finds a birth certificate with the name Jane O'Callahan wedged inside her baby book, Riley must face the reality that her parents are the ones who might be lying to her.

Why I'm wishing:

Adoption? Switched at birth? Kidnapping? I want to know! This whole birth dilemma/mystery has always intrigued me. Not a total fan of the theme of lying (why can't she tell her parents she has a boyfriend?), but I'm interested nonetheless.

Title: Cruel Beauty
Author: Rosamund Hodge
Publication date: January 24, 2013
Publisher: Balzer & Bray (HarperCollins)

Based on the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, Cruel Beauty is a dazzling love story about our deepest desires and their power to change our destiny.

Since birth, Nyx has been betrothed to the evil ruler of her kingdom-all because of a foolish bargain struck by her father. And since birth, she has been in training to kill him.

With no choice but to fulfill her duty, Nyx resents her family for never trying to save her and hates herself for wanting to escape her fate. Still, on her seventeenth birthday, Nyx abandons everything she's ever known to marry the all-powerful, immortal Ignifex. Her plan? Seduce him, destroy his enchanted castle, and break the nine-hundred-year-old curse he put on her people.

But Ignifex is not at all what Nyx expected. The strangely charming lord beguiles her, and his castle-a shifting maze of magical rooms-enthralls her.

As Nyx searches for a way to free her homeland by uncovering Ignifex's secrets, she finds herself unwillingly drawn to him. Even if she could bring herself to love her sworn enemy, how can she refuse her duty to kill him? With time running out, Nyx must decide what is more important: the future of her kingdom, or the man she was never supposed to love.

Why I want:

1. I love fairytale retellings. You all know that. But with reoccurring Beauty and the Beast retellings, I love to read the new ones, finding which version I like best. Besides, Beauty and the Beast rocks.

2. Assassin falls in love? Yes, please. She's been training to kill him and then she falls in loooove. Let the swooning commence.

3. That cover.

Wishlist Wednesday #19

Hosted by Pen to Paper

Wishlist Wednesday is a meme hosted by Pen to Paper that allows bloggers to highlight a book they are making grabby hands towards.

Author: Lauren Morrill

Publication date: January 7, 2014

Publisher: Delacorte

Meet Sloane Emily Jacobs: a seriously stressed-out figure-skater from Washington, D.C., who choked during junior nationals and isn’t sure she’s ready for a comeback. What she does know is that she’d give anything to escape the mass of misery that is her life.

Now meet Sloane Devon Jacobs, a spunky ice hockey player from Philly who’s been suspended from her team for too many aggressive hip checks. Her punishment? Hockey camp, now, when she’s playing the worst she’s ever played. If she messes up? Her life will be over.

When the two Sloanes meet by chance in Montreal and decide to trade places for the summer, each girl thinks she’s the lucky one: no strangers to judge or laugh at Sloane Emily, no scouts expecting Sloane Devon to be a hero. But it didn’t occur to Sloane E. that while avoiding sequins and axels she might meet a hockey hottie—and Sloane D. never expected to run into a familiar (and very good-looking) face from home. It’s not long before the Sloanes discover that convincing people you’re someone else might be more difficult than being yourself.

Why I want:

For some reason, I'm always pulled into plots that involve ice skating/hockey/anything with ice and sports. So this involves two ice sports and that makes me even more interested. There's also the fact that two girls switch lives and that makes me perk up even more. Of course, this is different than the regular switcheroo story because 1. They're not twins or identical strangers and 2. I'm afraid it might get a little too confusing since they both have the same names, unless they refer themselves by their middle names.

I had to add this after reading Christina's post here,
when she mentions this DCOM.
Also, I love the cover.

Wishlist Wednesday #18

Hosted by Pen to Paper
Since I received books for my birthday on Saturday, I'm definitely not lacking in reading material. However, ARCs always make me drool, so here's what I'm wishing for this week.

Title: Six Months Later

Author: Natalie Richards

Publication date: October 1, 2013

Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

Chloe didn't think about it much when she nodded off in study hall on that sleepy summer day. But when she wakes up, snow is on the ground and she can't remember the last six months of her life. Before, she'd been a mediocre student. Now, she's on track for valedictorian and being recruited by Ivy League schools. Before, she never had a chance with super jock Blake. Now he's her boyfriend. Before, she and Maggie were inseparable. Now her best friend won't speak to her.

What happened to her?
And why can't she remember?

Why I want:

The synopsis makes me so very intrigued! She sleeps in study hall and then wakes up months later, unable to remember her old life. However, now it feels like she's in a parallel universe. What happened? Why is everything "better" with a different future? What's up with her parents? Wouldn't someone realize that she's been asleep for six months? I'm thinking a kind of parallel universe/dream thing is happening like they do on TV shows. But I do think that it will have a somewhat darker tone.

Title: Tandem

Author: Anna Jarzab

Publication date: October 8, 2013

Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers

Everything repeats.
You. Your best friend. Every person you know.
Many worlds. Many lives--infinite possibilities.
Welcome to the multiverse.

Sixteen-year-old Sasha Lawson has only ever known one small, ordinary life. When she was young, she loved her grandfather's stories of parallel worlds inhabited by girls who looked like her but led totally different lives. Sasha never believed such worlds were real--until now, when she finds herself thrust into one against her will.

To prevent imminent war, Sasha must slip into the life of an alternate version of herself, a princess who has vanished on the eve of her arranged marriage. If Sasha succeeds in fooling everyone, she will be returned home; if she fails, she'll be trapped in another girl's life forever. As time runs out, Sasha finds herself torn between two worlds, two lives, and two young men vying for her love--one who knows her secret, and one who thinks she's someone she's not.

The first book in the Many-Worlds Trilogy, Tandem is a riveting saga of love and betrayal set in parallel universes in which nothing--and no one--is what it seems.

Why I want:

Really, it all comes down to the synopsis. A multiverse? The description makes me restless in my chair and I'm intrigued that the character has to "slip into the life of an alternate version of herself," but I'm already dreading the love triangle. Sometimes a love triangle is necessary, sometimes not so much. I'm seeing them too much lately so I'm even more wary. However, that doesn't stop me from making grabby hands whenever I see someone has it or snatched it up at BEA.

Title: The 5th Wave

Author: Rick Yancey

Publication date: Math 7, 2013

Publisher: Putnam Juvenile

The Passage meets Ender’s Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

Why I want:

This one is actually out already, which is unlike the books I usually put on Wishlist Wednesday. However, I haven't heard one bad review for it. Hearing all good reviews make me excited, but also nervous because that's a lot of expectations to put on one book. Whenever someone talks about it, they say how it's the next "big thing." Can I have this in my hands already please?

What are you wishing for this Wednesday? ...although most of you are probably at BEA and are getting those things RIGHT NOW *grumble*

Title: Fangirl

Author: Rainbow Rowell

Publication date: September 10, 2013

Publisher: St. Martin's Press

A coming-of-age tale of fan fiction, family and first love.

Cath is a Simon Snow fan.

Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this? Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

Or will she just go on living inside somebody else’s fiction?

Why I want:

Not only do I love the clean look of the cover (by clean, I mean that's it is simple and fun), but I also love the idea of the whole plot. I still haven't read any other Rainbow Rowell novels even though I keep meaning to! Seriously, I'm not a fan of fan fiction. I am a fan of a character being into fan fiction though. I want so please give.

Title: Siege and Storm

Author: Leigh Bardugo

Publication date: June 4, 2013

Publisher: Henry Holt and Co.

Darkness never dies.

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land, all while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret. But she can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long.

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world. With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka. But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal. Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her–or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm.

Why I'm wishing:

Just finishing the first book, Shadow and Bone, I was left with that dreaded impatience of wanting the sequel. Shadow and Bone was one of those savior books where I read tons of blah novels and then voilà! Shadow and Bone rescued me from my reading slump. So now I want to see what happens with all my beloved characters and get back to the fantastic fantasy. Please and thank you.

Publication date: April 23, 2013

Publisher: HarperTeen

From Sarah Strohmeyer, author of Smart Girls Get What They Want, comes this romantic comedy about one girl's summer job from hell. Think The Devil Wears Prada set in Disney World.

When cousins Zoe and Jess land summer internships at the Fairyland Kingdom theme park, they are sure they've hit the jackpot. With perks like hot Abercrombie-like Prince Charmings and a chance to win the coveted $25,000 Dream & Do grant, what more could a girl want?

Once Zoe arrives, however, she's assigned to serve "The Queen"-Fairyland's boss from hell. From spoon-feeding her evil lapdog caviar, to fetching midnight sleeping tonics, Zoe fears she might not have what it takes to survive the summer, much less win the money.

Soon backstabbing interns, a runaway Cinderella, and cutthroat competition make Zoe's job more like a nightmare than a fairy tale. What will happen when Zoe is forced to choose between serving The Queen and saving the prince of her dreams?

Why I'm wishing:

I have been in a really big contemporary phase lately and not only that it is contemporary, but the cover screams that too with all the colors. Then of course, it is about Disney, summer internships, and cousins (instead of sisters or best friends, hey, I like something different). Although I have never seen The Devil Wears Prada, this book sounds so interesting, I would be perfectly thrilled fine if this was on my doorstep.

Author: Sarah Dessen

Publication date: June 4, 2013

Publisher: Viking Juvenile

Luke is the perfect boyfriend: handsome, kind, fun. He and Emaline have been together all through high school in Colby, the beach town where they both grew up. But now, in the summer before college, Emaline wonders if perfect is good enough.

Enter Theo, a super-ambitious outsider, a New Yorker assisting on a documentary film about a reclusive local artist. Theo's sophisticated, exciting, and, best of all, he thinks Emaline is much too smart for Colby.

Emaline's mostly-absentee father, too, thinks Emaline should have a bigger life, and he's convinced that an Ivy League education is the only route to realizing her potential. Emaline is attracted to the bright future that Theo and her father promise. But she also clings to the deep roots of her loving mother, stepfather, and sisters. Can she ignore the pull of the happily familiar world of Colby?

Emaline wants the moon and more, but how can she balance where she comes from with where she's going?

Sarah Dessen's devoted fans will welcome this story of romance, yearning, and, finally, empowerment. It could only happen in the summer.

The last line of the synopsis from Goodreads says "...fans will welcome this story of romance, yearning, and, finally, empowerment." I would definitely welcome it. I would welcome it so much that I would probably jump up and down if I ever got accepted for an ARC of this.

Author: Leila Rasheed

Publication date: January 22, 2013

Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

One house, two worlds...

Rose Cliffe has never met a young lady like her new mistress. Clever, rich, and beautiful, Ada Averley treats Rose as an equal. And Rose could use a friend. Especially now that she, at barely sixteen, has risen to the position of ladies’ maid. Rose knows she should be grateful to have a place at a house like Somerton. Still, she can’t help but wonder what her life might have been had she been born a lady, like Ada.

For the first time in a decade, the Averleys have returned to Somerton, their majestic ancestral estate. But terrible scandal has followed Ada’s beloved father all the way from India. Now Ada finds herself torn between her own happiness and her family’s honor. Only she has the power to restore the Averley name—but it would mean giving up her one true love . . . someone she could never persuade her father to accept.

Sumptuous and enticing, the first novel in the At Somerton series introduces two worlds, utterly different yet entangled, where ruthless ambition, forbidden attraction, and unspoken dreams are hidden behind dutiful smiles and glittering jewels. All those secrets are waiting . . . at Somerton.

1. It's historical.
2. It's about "ruthless ambition, forbidden attraction, and unspoken dreams" along with "dutiful smiles and glittering jewels" and secrets!
3. I already love the dynamic with Rose and Ada.
4. A rich family coming back to their home in over a decade and finding trouble.
5. People have compared it to Downton Abbey

Did anyone just see that last line? DOWNTON ABBEY!

The premise was simple: five kids, just living their lives. There’d be a new movie about them every five years, starting in kindergarten. But no one could have predicted what the cameras would capture. And no one could have predicted that Justine would be the star. Now sixteen, Justine doesn’t feel like a star anymore. In fact, when she hears the crew has gotten the green light to film "Five at Sixteen," all she feels is dread. The kids who shared the same table in kindergarten have become teenagers who hardly know one another. And Justine, who was so funny and edgy in the first two movies, just feels like a disappointment. But these teens have a bond that goes deeper than what’s on film. They’ve all shared the painful details of their lives with countless viewers. They all know how it feels to have fans as well as friends. So when this latest movie gives them the chance to reunite, Justine and her costars are going to take it. Because sometimes, the only way to see yourself is through someone else’s eyes.

Smart, fresh, and frequently funny, “You Look Different in Real Life” is a piercing novel about life in an age where the lines between what’s personal and what’s public aren’t always clear.

Why I'm wishing:

A reality movie every five years on the same five kids starting kindergarten? It not only sounds different to me, but I also really look forward to seeing how it's done. What's the relationship like with Justine and the outside world? What about Justine and her costars? So yes, I will be reading this as soon as I can get my hands on it.

Title: Dark Triumph

Publication date: April 2, 2013

Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Books for Children

Sybella arrives at the convent’s doorstep half mad with grief and despair. Those that serve Death are only too happy to offer her refuge—but at a price. Naturally skilled in both the arts of death and seduction, the convent views Sybella as one of their most dangerous weapons.

But those assassin’s skills are little comfort when the convent returns her to a life that nearly drove her mad. Her father’s rage and brutality are terrifying, and her brother’s love is equally monstrous. And while Sybella is a weapon of justice wrought by the god of Death himself, He must give her a reason to live. When she discovers an unexpected ally imprisoned in the dungeons, will a daughter of Death find something other than vengeance to live for?

This heart-pounding sequel to Grave Mercy serves betrayal, treachery, and danger in equal measure, bringing readers back to fifteenth century Brittany and will keep them on the edge of their seats.

Why do I want this? Um, you obviously didn't read the synopsis or the first book, Grave Mercy. It's safe to say that I would DIE (along with my sister, Shelver) if I received an ARC of this. I would even die if I got a finished copy a month after its release. If I got any sliver of it, I would die.

So much death, I know, but it's appropriate considering the circumstances. It's about nun assassins serving Death and Sybella is the toughest of them all.

Robin LaFevers is not only extremely nice to fans (I had a chat with her over Twitter about Mexican food. It was quite nice.), but she's also an amazing writer. Added to that, Shelver told me some information she received from Robin about this book. So yes, I am extremely excited.

tick, tick, tick, tick, tick
it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

Tahereh Mafi is amazing. I fell in love with Shatter Me, I still have to stop being lazy and cheap and get Destory Me which is from Warner's perspective, and why else wouldn't I LOVE to get this? The author writes so beautifully and from what I see, February 5th is the ultimate release date for amazing books.

I also look longingly at my screen with jealously whenever I see someone has an ARC of it.

Title: Scarlet

Author: Marissa Meyer

Publication date: February 5th, 2013

Publisher: Feiwel and Friends

ISBN: 0312642962

Cinder returns in the second thrilling installment of the New York Times-bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother and the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she has no choice but to trust him, though he clearly has a few dark secrets of his own.

As Scarlet and Wolf work to unravel one mystery, they find another when they cross paths with Cinder. Together, they must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen who will do anything to make Prince Kai her husband, her king, her prisoner.

Doesn't anyone else jump up and down when they see this?

Not only is it the sequel of one of my favorite books of 2012, but I also have heard repeatedly that it's even better! The lucky bloggers who got an ARC of it (you can spread the love over here, if you want, guys. Contact info is at the top and I have a sister in this community too;) have said over Twitter that it's amazing and surprisingly, possibly better than Cinder. I was shocked at first that any sequel could be better than Cinder, but I won't question it. I just want it.

Wishlist Wednesday #7

Property of Pen to Paper

After having a WONDERFUL Christmas, I feel quite greedy for posting a Wishlist post right after this. I'm in such a grateful mood that I want nothing. However, this is a book that isn't published until 2013, so that doesn't mean I'm greedy...right?

Being a 16-year-old safecracker and active-duty daughter of international spies has its moments, good and bad. Pros: Seeing the world one crime-solving adventure at a time. Having parents with super cool jobs. Cons: Never staying in one place long enough to have friends or a boyfriend. But for Maggie Silver, the biggest perk of all has been avoiding high school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations. Then Maggie and her parents are sent to New York for her first solo assignment, and all of that changes. She'll need to attend a private school, avoid the temptation to hack the school's security system, and befriend one aggravatingly cute Jesse Oliver to gain the essential information she needs to crack the case . . . all while trying not to blow her cover.

Did you read that amazing-ness? Because I don't know how anybody can't be excited for this. She's a spy, going to New York (my dream home), going undercover, and it's all written by Robin Benway!

I'm reading one of her novels right now: Audrey, Wait! thanks to the incredible Alice from Alice in Readerland. I'll post a review of it once I'm done, but her writing is great. So along with the mentioned things above, I really don't see how it can get any better.

Also, I'd like to point out something:

The cover.

You guys, just take a moment and look. It's not gorgeous or anything, but I adore it. It reminds me of another spy book (well, series) The Gallagher Girls by Ally Carter. The lower part of her outfit in this cover is so cute that I wouldn't be able to pull off, but my little sister could. Then there's all the different words in the background. Espionage. Mole. Spy. Sleuth.

Love.
