Movie Mania: The Bookish Upcomers and Potentials

Raise your hand if you hate movies.

If you actually raised your hand.
Movies are magical, almost as much as books. For about two hours, I'm entranced by the wonderfully bright screen, as I snack on goodies, and get to be involved in one whole story. So when you combine books and movies TOGETHER, well, you just rocked my socks. that is still a saying. I talked about YA books turning into movies before, but this time I'm just letting you know that HEY, it's happening, in case you didn't notice. Also, I fully realize that I may be missing lots (especially in the optioned section).

Coming Out in 2014:

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Release date: June 6

EXTREME FANGIRLING MOMENT. If you forgot, I reviewed it here. Also, here's the trailer so we can all sigh together.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Release date: August 22

The trailer didn't make me cry like it did others, but I did get goosebumps.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner
Release date: September 19

Er, never read, but here's the trailer

The Giver by Lois Lowry
Release date: August 15

Another one I haven't read, but it does look interesting. The book cover needs work though. Trailer here.

Mockingjay Part 1 by Suzanne Collins
Release date: November 21

For whatever reason, I didn't realize it was coming out THIS YEAR.

It's going to happen:

Mockingjay Part 2 by Suzanne Collins

BRING ON THE TEARS.

Insurgent and Allegiant by Veronica Roth

I really need to read these last two before they come out.

Fantastic Beasts by J.K. Rowling

To all you Rowling readers.

The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

Okay, I haven't read this one, but I've heard funny things.

Optioned:

Paper Towns by John Green

Love me some TFiOS, but strangely, I haven't read this one yet.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

*dances*

Heist Society by Ally Carter

There's been a false alarm before, but let's just take a moment and rejoice at the fact that it's been optioned by Lions-freaking-gate with Elizabeth Banks as the producer. HELLO, HEAVEN.

Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell

I'm in love with her idea of unknown actors, as she stated in this article

Which movies are you excited for?

  1. Oh my gosh there is so much awesomeness that has been optioned that I didn't even realise! I can't wait to watch If I Stay, although I didn't enjoy the first book as much as the second, I loved watching the trailer! I'm also super excited for Insurgent and Mockingjay, there always seems to be a big movie released around my birthday, so I'm thrilled that I have another one to look forward to in Mockingjay! Thanks for sharing a brilliant post with us! :)

  3. I need to read TFiOS. I have been putting it off for two years now, but nope. I'll try to read it this month. Hopefully :D I need to before June haha. I didn't cry either with If I Stay trailer, but omg, the song broke me and I WILL FUCKING SOB IN THE THEATRE. I KNOW IT. Um. Can we just please take a moment and admire the brilliance that is Dylan O'Brien? Yeah. The Maze Runner is a must watch on my calendar :D Wut? I haven't heard about The Giver O.o MOCKINGJAY YESSSSS. Lols. I hated DUFF. The guy was such an ass imo. And holy shit, so many films optioned :O YA is taking over :D

  4. So many adaptations! I hope Heist Society actually happens this time.

Also, Gallagher Girls, Unremembered, and The Lunar Chronicles have all been optioned, so... "*crosses fingers*

    1. Oh, YESSSSS! I forgot about those! Although GG has had so many false alarms.

  5. Besides Heist Society I haven't read any of the above books, which means I'm not able to say what ones I'm excited for, but Heist Society!!!!!!!! I truly hope that this time it gets made. Though, I remember the first time it got optioned it was mentioned the characters might get aged up to their twenties, I hope if this one actually gets picked up, they'll keep them as teens. But I just want it to get made into an actual movie! It would be amazing!!!!!!!

And I know the Gallagher Girls was optioned, too! I would love if that got turned into a movie! Though, I think in a way, Heist Society would make a better movie than GG, and GG would make a better TV show, you know? But that's just my opinion! Either way, I hope they both get turned into movies! :)

    1. Oh man, I hope they stay as teens or I will be SO disappointed! I second the GG statement. HS would be better as a movie I think, but I would love to see GG on the screen, although I'd be so nervous. But I actually could see Disney Channel trying to take over and I would NOT be happy.

  6. So many movies to watch! My, I can't wait for TFIOS to come out. I got all my friends into it, and we plan to see it all together, like, 15 of us or something. I am just dying about the fact that Heist Society might be a movie. Every time I read it, I've always imagined it a movie! And of course, the Hunger Games: Mockingjay. Enough said. And the Divergent Trilogy! I was so excited when the first movie came out last month, and I am still smacking myself in the forehead about the fact that I still haven't seen it yet. Ugh, I'm so excited for everything!

    1. Oh, that sounds awesome! I wish more of my friends have read TFiOS. My best friend did, but she'll be out of town. GET ON THAT DIVERGENT MOVIE TRAIN.

  7. LOL no I really DO hate most movies. I would rather create my own mental images by reading instead of seeing someone else's vision. I do like a FEW movies but most of the time I would rather read a book or play a game. I still haven't seen Catching Fire or Frozen. >.<

I do want to see The Maze Runner though. It looks awesome. The only reason I want to see it is that it totally matches up with how I saw it in my head.

    1. Oh man, Kara. Although I see your point, but STILL. It's MOVIES. Love 'em.

Oh really?! I still have to read that one!

  8. I didn't like The Duff as much as most people, but it's interesting to hear that it's on its way to becoming a film. I didn't know it had been optioned! I'm crazy excited about The Maze Runner though. I had some mixed thoughts about the book, but the trailer looks fantastic. I also hope Shadow & Bone will get under way soon as I LOVE that world. It would be fantastic to see it on screen, and with a Harry Potter producer on board no less.

    1. The DUFF was one I've been meaning to read over the years, and just...haven't. Oh a HP producer? Haven't seen the movies, but it's still exciting to have a well-known producer do it!

  9. Mockingjay 1+2, shadow & bone (!!!!!) and The fault in our stars are the movies I absolutely can't wait for :D I haven't seen Divergent yet (next week) but I don't really get why they split the last part.. Feels like a media stunt, because all the other books are doing it. I don't think there is enough story to spread through two movies, so that's going to be interesting.

I haven't read If you stay (also haven't seen the trailer) or any of the others books, so I don't know how I feel about them. I will see the movies and I might read the books before I go to the cinema :)

    1. I can't wait to see how you like Divergent! Oh, I forgot about them splitting it up. Ugh, it's definitely a media/money stunt. I don't like this new trend. I get it for Mockingjay, but still.

      READ AND WATCH, MEL!

  10. Great guide! I didn't know about some of these (though the ones I didn't know about I also haven't read)! And if you ever read The Giver, the trailer would have made you sad. The feel of the trailer is completely different from the book.

    1. Aw no. I haven't read The Giver, but I hate it when they divert from the book so much.

  11. It seems like they're snatching up book rights left and right. I remember the movie rights were sold for The Night Circus before it was even released. The Maze Runner looks like it will be good.

    1. Right?! No wonder, it seems like Hollywood is running out of ideas. Wow, really? I haven't read that one so I guess I should!

  12. Love this post! I didn't realize that some of the books you mentioned have been optioned for film, so now I'm excited to check those books out (I can't believe I've never read Shadow and Bone or anything by Rainbow Rowell). The one thing that blows my mind is the J.K. Rowling book. I haven't read it, but how in the world are they going to make three movies out of a 42-page book???

  13. Right? Movies are the BEST. TV shows too. I just love anything visual (which can totally include books!) and my BIGGEST pet peeve is people who fall asleep when they are watching movies with me D: How does one fall asleep during a movie? Anyway. It seems like there are more book to movies coming out that original movies nowadays. Not sure how I feel about that. I like the idea but it's so hard to execute them well. Shadow & Bone by Dreamworks would be very interesting...

    1. HA, I feel the same way! When a friend puts on a movie to go to bed, I always end up watching until the end and they fall asleep in the beginning. That I understand, but I wish in that moment, I could be like them. I know, I'm a little nervous for that one, but excited.

  14. I might die on the spot when I see the Darkling on the big screen. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH. Even though he's not always worthy of that love:) I had no idea Heist Society had been optioned, I can definitely see that one as a movie so I hope it makes it all the way to production. I love that so many more YA books are getting made into movies now. So exciting:)

  15. The Duff is going to be a movie??? So exciting.

I didn't know about a lot of these.

I didn't cry for the If I Stay trailer but it made me sad remembering/thinking about Where She Went lol

  16. I don't think I need to say anything about The Fault in Our Stars because it's pretty obvious that I, like almost every YA blogger, cannot wait. I'm just hoping for a lot of lines taken directly from the book so I can say them along with the actors!

As for your "optioned" section, I still cannot get over my excitement that a Paper Towns movie is actually happening. And I'm hoping so hard that Heist Society will get to see the big screen because it's such a perfect movie story. All the action and clever plotting would be brilliant in a film, and I would love seeing how everyone involved would interpret the characters!
